Rob Sawyer Presents Aurora Pin to William Gibson January 2012
AURORA AWARDS: The Canadian Science Fiction & Fantasy Association Awards, the Auroras, have been presented annually since 1980. The awards have 10 categories and recognize national winners at different conventions each year. This year, a local presentation ceremony was held at the Gibsons Library on Sunday, Jan. 22, for local winner Tarol Hunt, who was presented with the best English Graphic Novel and his nomination pin. Vancouver author Colleen Anderson was also presented with a nominee pin as runner-up for best English poem. In attendance were two previous Aurora winners who live on the Sunshine Coast, Donna McMahon and Marci Tentchoff. Despite our efforts to present him with his Nominee pin,William Gibson, a very busy man, managed to be out of our reach for a long time. So when I ran into Rob Sawyer at SFContario 2/Canvention 32 and he told me that he’d be on stage with Gibson in January 2012 I took the opportunity of asking him if he’d make the presentation on our behalf. And here it is. - Clint Budd-
For the 30th anniversary of the Aurora Awards — Canada’s top honour in science-fiction and fantasy writing — all previous nominees were presented with commemorative pins. Most of the nominees received theirs at ceremonies at SF conventions across Canada held in 2010 (I got mine at Keycon in May of that year). But Vancouver’s William Gibson, who has been nominated for the Aurora numerous time (including for his collaboration with Bruce Sterling, The Difference Engine), and has won it twice (for Mona Lisa Overdrive and Virtual Light), didn’t make it to any of those conventions. -Robert J.Sawyer-
